plots are deliberate exercises just as are strategic plans. depending on the nature of the organization, strategy may also emerge from the past. consistent, successful ways of doing business can be viewed as strategies as opposed to intentional choices

imagine a manager who makes decisions to enhance a customer support process that is already highly effective. even though he doesn't intentionally create an advantage, his actions nonetheless lead to one

another way to define strategy is "positioning," or how you decide to present yourself in the market. strategy helps you explore how your organization and environment are aligned, and this is key to establishing a competitive advantage that is sustainable

in this scenario, you might develop a niche product to avoid competition, or you might try to distinguish yourself from a multitude of competitors

organizations make their strategy decisions largely based on their culture. just as patterns of behavior shape an organization's perspective, patterns of thinking will determine its abilities

a company that promotes risk-taking and innovation among its employees might emphasize innovation as the main thrust of its strategy. alternatively, a company which emphasizes reliable data handling may opt to outsource these services to other businesses
